The sculpture began in 1995 from a 12,000 lb. triangular block. The bottom is almost finished and some of the weight has been carved from the sides.

The piece has been placed upright and some of the bulk has been cut away.

The sculpture took form slowly because it was not a commission. This is how it looked in August 2000.

I decided to have the wrist of the hand forming tree roots that were finding purchase in stone crevices.

Meg had suggested that the bottom looked like an open book; it was hard to see it any other way after that.

We moved the sculpture to our new studio in the summer of 2002. I've carved away the tree roots because I thought they were too distracting to the composition.

I'm comparing the shape of the sculpture to my hand. I'm trying to give the piece more natural proportions.

The sculpture is nearing completion.

The hand is put on the cart-and-rail system and moved into the studio for final detail carving and sanding.

The hand is finished and moved out of the studio in August 2002.

In October 2003, I hired a crane to move the sculpture from the studio to the sculpture garden.

The finished sculpture takes its place on the concrete pedestal in the sculpture garden.
